Every year on the morning of February 14 since 1976 people wake up the city of Portland, ME to thousands of red hearts taped to doorways throughout the peninsula on standard 8.5 by 11 sheets of paper. Simple, yet effective. It seems every year this captures the spirit of Valentines’s Day like no other gesture.
Originally dubbed the “Valentine’s Day bandit”, the person has yet to be identified nor has anyone come forward to confess. Throughout the years larger hearts have been taped to locations like the Cumberland County Civic center, The Holiday Inn and City Hall We personally love this. Love given with no expectation of it being returned. Spreading love the way it should be spread. A little bit of joy to wake up to on Valentine’s Day.
Here are a few of our favorite photos over the years from the bandit, snap some photos and tag us in them on our page or instagram on the morning of February 14th! @iloveportlandme
