PortlandTaps.com Third Thursday – Brian Boru

PortlandTaps.com once again will host their Third Thursday at Brian Boru on August 19, as Summer squares off against Autumn this month with Shipyard Brewing Co. on hand to offer their brews for $3 a pint from 8pm until midnight. That’s right, Shipyard Summer Ale is still available for those who cannot let go of our mild weather, while Shipyard Pumpkinhead has been released for those crazy few who are welcoming that crisp autumn air, or just want further excuse to have another seasonal brew to choose from.

Should be a great night out…A Reggae band will be there as well to entertain with live music.

Can you let go of summer? Something tells me the site of Shipyard Pumpkinhead on store shelves and bar taps means a cold front is soon on the way. Can Shipyard hold off production and shipment until say October next year, please?

Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale Returns

Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale

Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale

As the air has become a little more crisp, and the end of summer nears, I am excited about the return of Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale to Portland store shelves and bars. The popular seasonal wheat ale goes down smooth with what seems like a pinch of nutmeg and cinnamon, like you just finished a small bite of pumpkin pie.

The spiced flavor and aroma continues to keep many fans anxiously awaiting the brews return each fall and coming back for more. This year Shipyard Brewing Company launched the spiced beer at a kickoff party on August 20 at Bull Feeney’s on Fore Street in Portland, which attracted a large crowd of followers that seems to grow with each pint or 12 ounce bottle consumed.

With such a refreshing taste, and only 4.5% alcohol by volume, Shipyard Pumpkinhead attracts even the picky beer drinker or interestingly as I have witnessed, the individual who will only drink Shipyard Pumpkinhead beer and nothing else. Man, I don’t know that I could go almost a whole year without a beer.

Enjoy your brew…. Save some for me…. And if you’re out in town and you see me…I’ll take a Pumpkinhead.

Two Fat Cats Bakery

IMG_1734After reading the Bon Appetit Magazine Article, I had to check out Two Fat Cats Bakery at 47 India Street in Portland, located a short walk from Coffee By Design, which is a fine compliment for this lovely bakery.

The only disappointment today was finding out the famous Pumpkin Whoopie Pies with Maple-Marshmallow Cream will not be made until later this fall (around October). I guess I jumped the gun in my thinking after Shipyard Brewery delivered their Pumpkinhead this August.

Two Fat Cats Bakery bakes everything daily from scratch, and I mean everything….. Whether you’re in the mood for a homemade pie, cupcakes, whoopie pies, breads, or cookies, you’re taste buds will be satisfied. They pride themselves on the use of local products as much as they can, and as the seasons allow. For those of you who know someone about to get married, Two Fat Cats also prepares cakes and desserts for weddings and other special occasions, as well as most major holidays (they even have a separate menu on their website that details all that they can do).

IMG_1736For that sweet tooth in you, I would highly recommend checking them out….Oh, and did I mention the various accolades they have received in addition to the recent mention of their Pumpkin Whoopie Pies in Bon Appetit Magazine’s awarding of Portland, Maine, as “America’s Foodiest Small Towns” for 2009….Here is the list of their previous recognition;

- “Best Bakershops” – Bon Appetit Magazine, Sept. 2008
- “Where To Eat Now” - Downeast Magazine, May 2008
- “Best Bakery” – Boston Magazine’s New England Travel & Life: Best of New England 2007
- “Standout Bakery” – Food & Wine Magazine, June 2007

For more information, or to visit their delicious treats on the web, check out; Two Fat Cats Bakery, or visit them in person at 47 India Street, Portland. (207) 347-5144. Enjoy!
