Irish American Club of Maine – St. Patricks Day Dinner & St Pat’s Parade

Courtesy of apexembdesigns.com

Join the Irish American Club of Maine this weekend for their Annual Traditional Irish Dinner this Saturday evening, March 12, 2011, at St. Dominic’s Church on the corner of State Street and Gray Street in Portland. Fill up on great food while enjoying the company of great people.

On Sunday, head down to Commercial Street in Portland for the Annual St. Patricks Parade beginning at noon, at Becky’s Diner, which will proceed down Commercial Street and end with a Ceili Dance at RiRa Irish Pub, 72 Commercial Street, Portland, from 2:30pm-4:30pm with live music. Not that the celebration will ever end…even though it’s Sunday.  There will be pipe bands, flags, marchers, music and fun.

Great! We don’t have to wait until Thursday, when St. Patrick’s Day is officially recognized to celebrate. Not that any other day stopped us before. Portland has always been a buzz on St. Patrick’s Day. Wake up at dawn and enjoy a traditional breakfast downtown and get the festivities started early.

Enjoy your weekend, your family and friends, and your beer. Take care!

Wet Basement? Try a Water-Powered Sump Pump system

For those Greater Portland Maine homeowners who have experienced water in their basement and / or currently have a sump pump without a battery back up system there are products available that do not utilize electricity to pump the water from your basement or sump pit.

Yes, that’s correct. There are a number of products out there that now use the pressure of the domestic water supply to activate your sump pump should the power go out. These products have been around for some time though never received much attention. Even a trip to your local Home Depot or Lowe’s here in Greater Portland Maine does not locate one of these systems, but rather the electricity powered standard submersible and pedestal sump pumps. The water-powered systems also provide a bit more sense of security than a battery back up system to a standard sump pump unit which typically do not last long should the power be out for an extended period of time.

The following are links to a few articles of interest should you wish to learn more about these water-powered sump pump products and whether they are right for you and your home in Greater Portland Maine;

1. Basepump – Water-powered sump pump backup system

2. Basement Buddy – Water-powered sump pump

3. King Pumps – Liberty Pump Water-powered sump pump

Should you have any questions about sump pumps, you should consult with your real estate agent and local home inspector. We can gladly recommend to you trusted and experienced home inspectors.

Portland Ice Bar January 27-29, 2011 – Portland Harbor Hotel

Courtesy of www.elegantice.com

Portland, Maine, may be a bit chilly this winter, yet when the mercury drops after the first of the year it reminds me of the return of The Ice Bar from Thursday, January 27, 2011, to Saturday, January 29, 2011. Now on to their seventh annual event, the Portland Harbor Hotel is prepared to celebrate against this year.

Enjoy specialty martinis, beers and wines outside in the courtyard at bars sculpted from ice. Watch your drink poured through beautiful ice sculptures as well. If you need to warm up, you can enjoy your drinks inside the hotel while enjoying complimentary hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment. Doors will open each day for The Ice Bar at 5pm to ticket holders and will end each night at 9pm.

The Ice Bar is sponsored this year by Shipyard Brewing Company and Rokk Vodka. As mentioned, there will be food available to guests from The Grill Room, Havana South, and Denny Mike’s ‘Cue Stuff (award-winning barbeque).

You can buy your Portland Ice Bar tickets in advance at Portland Ice Bar Tickets. Again, a reminder that this event has been well-attended in the past, and has previously sold out, so pick up your tickets early.
