Maine Red Claws 2010 Season Opener Friday night

The Maine Red Claws, the NBA D-League affiliate of the Boston Celtics and Charlotte Bobcats, will open up the 2010-2011 season at home at the Portland Expo this Friday, November 19, 2010, at 7pm. There are still tickets available, though you’ll want to act quick as EVERY home game last year during their inaugural season was a sell out.

The Red Claws will take on the Austin Toros (baby brothers to the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA) for a two game weekend series with another game on Saturday, November 20. The home opener promises to be a real entertainer as the Rim Rockers, a slam dunk team who has entertained many NBA crowds will make a half time appearance. Yes, and the Lady Red Claws Dance Team is back as well folks…

Fans should also note that they’ll receive a rally towel thanks to The Law Offices of Joe Bornstein to help stir up some excitement in the Portland Expo. Careful where you swing the towel or someone may end up calling 1-800-CALL-JOE on you after the game.

In all seriousness though, the Maine Red Claws deserve the recognition for bringing professional basketball back to Portland, Maine, and for giving back to the community through many different facets. Hats off to the Maine Red Claws and we wish them all the best.

For more information on the team, please visit Maine Red Claws.com and if you can’t make a game you can always listen to them live on The Big Jab WJAB 96.3FM  and 1440AM.

It's Official! – Maine Red Claws Announce NBA Affiliations

RedClawsYou knew it was coming, and thankfully the Maine Red Claws, the new NBA Development League (D-League) team based here in Portland has finally announced the team will be affiliated with two parent clubs, the Boston Celtics and the Charlotte Bobcats of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Great news for one as fans will be able to enjoy the development of young prospects with hopes of joining the home town favorite Boston Celtics, and the possibility that certain players with the parent club now can be sent to work on their skills in Portland with the Maine Red Claws throughout the long NBA 82 game season (the D-League plays 48 games).

Also, the Charlotte Bobcats being a fairly new team in the NBA, have a rather young team and continue to draft young talent to develop, which should be great for the fans here in Portland. Both the Celtics and the Bobcats have great management, coaching, and former NBA stars working on the staffs of these teams in Michael Jordan, Doc Rivers, and Danny Ainge to name a few. Word has it that you might just happen to see one of them, or a former Boston Celtics great at an upcoming game this season. Keep your eyes and ears tuned as the inaugural season for the Maine Red Claws promises to be one to remember!

Sports Enthusiasm – Seadogs, Pirates, Maineiacs, RedClaws

Lacking a major league level sports team has not kept us from enjoying professional sports here in Portland, Maine. From the early years of the Maine Mariners, Portland Windjammers, and Maine Guides, Portland sports fans have always enjoyed athletics and the success of local Mainers while traditionally maintaining loyalty to the Boston area pro sports teams. Thanks to our love of sports, the fans in the area have witnessed a flurry of great athletes play in the Greater Portland area thanks to the Portland Seadogs, Portland Pirates, and Lewiston Maineiacs, and the visiting opponents. Sidney Crosby, David Ortiz, Josh Beckett, Dustin Pedroia, Jonathan Papelbon, Kevin Youkilis, and various other athletes have spent time in Portland and amazed the great fans and athletic enthusiasts who may not always get down to Fenway Park, The Garden, or Gillette Stadium to enjoy a game.

The Stanley Cup even visited Portland in 2007, as the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, the one-time parent franchise of the Portland Pirates, hoisted the trophy in the NHL and recognized Portland’s efforts in helping them bring home the Cup with a number of former Pirates on the championship team. Cheers to Portland, the sports fans of Maine for supporting their teams and continuing the opportunity to see sports live at such a high level of play. http://www.portlandpirates.com, http://www.portlandseadogs.com , http://www.lewistonhockey.com

Portland recently added a NBA Development League Franchise named the “Maine Red Claws” for the 2009-2010 season. What another great opportunity for Maine basketball fans to see players affiliated with NBA teams play and develop before our eyes and hopefully one day suit up in the NBA. You know the D-League as it’s referred to produced 15 percent of the rosters of the 2007-2008 season. For more information on the new Maine team check out http://www.nbamaine.com
