Portland Maine named to GQ’s Coolest Small Cities in America

Portland, Maine can add one more piece of national recognition to the books which should ignite additional tourist traffic thanks to GQ Magazine’s November 2010 edition. In an online GQ Magazine article, the magazine notes you can “walk anywhere in this town – even in December” and provides readers with some great attractions to make sure they include in their travels. On their short list are Fore Street restaurant, J’s Oyster Bar, Bresca, and Diamond Cove General Store (a 40 minute ferry ride away).

We really like their graphic for Portland, Maine, in the article with the lobster saying “Eat me. Oregon!”

If you have been to Portland, you can appreciate the article, if you’ve never been…then we’ll welcome you here hopefully very soon! Safe travels.

Portland Trails – 10K Trail to Ale Race/Walk – September 19

Portland Trails is back again this year with their 11th Annual 10K Trail to Ale Race/Walk on Sunday, September 19, with a scenic 6.2 mile off-road race starting on Fore Street near The Portland Company with a loop around Back Cove to a finish along the East End Beach.

The race has become very popular with an estimated 1,500 participants likely to toe the starting line, drawing from the sponsorship by New England Runner magazine and their feature of the race in the New England Pub Series. One reason, everyone participating in the race is welcomed to a post-race party sponsored by Shipyard Brewing Company providing complimentary beverages, Whole Foods Market providing healthy treats, and Portland Pie Company delivering the free pizza. Who wouldn’t want to grab a slice of pizza, a beer, and listen to some music after a 10k race?

The 10k race begins at 9 am on Fore Street near the beginning of the Eastern Promenade Trail and finishes at the East End Beach after a nice trip around Back Cove. The post-race party will be held at The Portland Company from 9:30am-11:30 am. There’s your motivation right there….finish earlier and have more pizza and beer! Wait there’s more…Awards and raffle prizes will be announced at 10:30am.

For more information or to register for Portland Trails 10K Trail to Ale Race / Walk – visit Trails.org. Enjoy the race and good luck!

Rosie’s – Burgers and Darts anyone?

Visit Rosie’s at 330 Fore Street, Portland, and you can count on a great burger (served after 10pm too), a laid back atmosphere, and of course darts! In May 2007, Esquire Magazine even gave props to Rosie’s by honoring it as one of America’s Best Bars.

Below, Doug McIntire, winner of our “Portland in 48 Hours Contest”, provides his vivid description of Rosie’s;

With the crowded sidewalks and corner shops beckoning the passerby from all angles, the Old Port can become at once, wonderful and daunting. The smell of various eateries blend with the pungent salt spray from Commercial Street, tantalizing the visitor and making the most staunch dieter throw caution to the shore breeze. Where does one go, however, when an undefined hunger tears at shop weary soul and the mix of company you happened to keep cannot decide on any one venue?

Just walk a block up past the Customs House and down the cobble stones of Fore Street to Rosie’s. This unassuming; some may dare say, quaint restaurant and pub is famous for serving up some of the best fare in town. Whether your crew is craving fish and chips, sandwiches, a full pint, or even more exotic fare such as local sea food, no one will be disappointed. Even the vegetarian among you will find Rosie’s a haven of taste. That said, let’s talk about the burgers. Whether its bacon and bleu cheese burger, barbecue, or one of their signature burgers like the Fore Street, Rosie’s burgers are big, fresh, and cooked to order. Top that off with a pint and a game of darts, and your Old Port meal is complete.

Rosie’s has everything a person needs for calming the Old Port hunger pangs. Their staff is friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. Hey, there’s even free popcorn you can get yourself while you wait for your food. Enjoy your meal, then head back out to shop, sit by the bay, or just people watch.
