Santacon Portland 2010 – Saturday, December 4

Portland’s Old Port will experience a bit more holiday cheer again this year as the 3rd Annual Santacon Portland takes place Saturday, December 4th. Following another successful event last year with over 80 folks dressed as Santa, Mrs. Claus, Rudolph, Elves, Missletoe, and even a Christmas tree, the Santacon fun will begin at 4pm at The Empire, before embarking on everyone’s favorite drinking establishments to spread the holiday spirit throughout Portland’s Old Port. Everyone is welcomed to join in on the fun and excitement and enjoy a holiday drink or two, and yes, if you dress up there will be food and drink specials at each stop.

The organizers have created a list of tips to keep you off Santa’s naughty list;

1. Come in costume - its kinda the whole point. Don’t be “that guy” who shows up with only a Santa hat on. Be creative. If you’re not into Santa, come as some other holiday themed person or object. We are sure to have some Mistletoes, Christmas trees, snowmen, elves, and reindeer among us on Saturday. And maybe most importantly, the beer and food specials will only apply to people in costume! Do your wallet the favor!

2. Pace yourself. Santa likes to have a glass of water every now and then between his holiday beverages! With all those drink specials it’s going to be hard not to get a little too jolly, but don’t be that Santa. Santa reserves the right to deny that he knows you.

3. Tip well, treat the bars well and pay your tab. These places are nice enough to put up with us and to offer us some sweet deals, so return the favor! Santa is nothing if he’s not generous and joyous!

4. When you hear “Santas on the move,” finish your beer, pay your tab and follow the herd of Santas to the next spot.

5. Bring a camera. There’s truly is nothing like 50, 75, 100+ Santas marching down Congress St., ordering a beer, or doing anything for that matter. You will want to have photos to show friends and family not able to join us (or to help jog your own memory if you have one Prelude too many) The pics from last year are great, and with even more Santas this year, the photo ops will be plenty!

Halloween Party At Empire Dine and Dance, October 26 7-9pm

Portland Maine – Ben Chipman, Candidate for Legislative District 119 will hold a Halloween Party at Empire Dine and Dance on Tuesday October 26th, 7-9pm.

Portland jazz-rock group Hobo will perform a spooky set of musical amalgamation with guitar, drums, and oboe. Local author Patrick Quinlan will tell ghost stories conjured up from his famed, blood curdling thrillers. Former Maine State Slam Champ Tina Smith will recite with her new joint – The Bo-Rap City Choir. Beth Blood owner of the former Suitsmi Costume Shop will appear as Celebrity Judge for Best Costume.

The event will include a costume party with prizes and a bobbing for apples tank – for the kid in you. A voter registration table will be open throughout the night as a way to reach out to all revelers, encouraging voter participation and civic involvement.

Campaign Treasurer Ashley Willems-Phaneuf says, “It’s a fun event and a way to reach out, perhaps to a younger crowd that traditionally has a lower voter turn out. We’ll get people registered and politically active.”

The event is free and open to the public aged 21+.

Please note, ILovePortlandMaine.com is not affiliated with any candidates.

Kill The Karaoke at Empire Dine and Dance every Wednesday

Every Wednesday night, Empire Dine and Dance brings to you “Kill The Karaoke”, a unique opportunity to sing to the crowd as the band Trainwreck performs your request live. The talented band has quite a Song List to choose from, and you can even request that the band learn your song for the following week. What a deal, huh? No wonder Kill The Karaoke was voted Best Karaoke by The Portland Phoenix readers.

Like old school karaoke in the bars of Tokyo, you’ll have the lyrics up on the screen for you and quite a crowd to cheer you along. Get there early, as sign up starts at 9pm. On top of that, the organizers have arranged for local photographer, Sam Cousins, to take photos of the singers, and they showcase some of the best performers via YouTube Videos.

Hmmm, maybe you could be the next American Idol?

For more information on Kill The Karaoke, visit KillTheKaraoke.com.

SantaCon 2009 Portland, Maine – Santa’s Coming!

SantaFor some the Holidays come a little sooner each year, as is the case for 2nd Annual SantaCon 2009, hitting the Empire Dine and Dance on Saturday, December 5, beginning at 4pm.

In case you missed last years inaugural event in Portland, SantaCon involves those with extra holiday spirit dressing up as Santa Clause or other Christmas/Holiday related characters, gathering for a fun time of drinks and dancing, and spreading holiday cheer throughout the Old Port.

As this is a worldwide event, similar groups gather all over the world with the largest gathering in New York City, with each creating their own event and idea of boosting others spirits, or consuming a few additional spirits to stay warm. Sounds like a blast, and I am sure you will have fun. Now go find a suit and join the delightful crew for an evening in Portland.

Additional details on the event…

SantaCon is a not-for-profit, non-political, non-religious & non-logical Santa Claus convention. It’s an international event with cities throughout the world hosting their own unique version of the celebration. The largest of the Santacons takes place in NYC, which had close to 2,000 Santas attend in 2008. Check out the links below for more info, a more detailed history and dates for other SantaCons across the country/world.

Who’s in charge?
SANTA.

SANTA’S RULES:
* Santa looks like Santa. Holiday apparel is mandatory. A Santa hat is not enough. Get a Santa suit. Buy a Santa suit. Make a Santa suit. Steal a Santa suit. Get creative: be a Secret Santa, a Santasaurus, Candy-cane, a Reindeer, a Chanukah Chicken, a latke. Just don’t wear your jeans.
* Santa acts like Santa. Be jolly. Belly-laugh. Let people sit on your lap. Give out gifts.
* Santa doesn’t get arrested:
* Don’t mess with kids. Don’t mess with cops. Don’t mess with security. Don’t mess with Santa.

SANTA’S GUIDELINES:
It’s a long day, so be prepared. Here’s some tips to keep your sleigh running all day.

* Eat something & pace yourself. Only Santa is responsible for Santa’s ability to stay vertical.
* Dress warm. It’s the northeast. It’s winter. Wear layers so you’ll be comfortable anywhere.
* Stay with the group. Go with friends and call one of them if you wander off. Try not to wander off, though.
* Stay hydrated
* Don’t be “that” Santa. Your friends want to have fun, not have to take care of you.
* Pay your own tab. Tip well for putting up with us.
* Santa does not make children cry (unless they whine, snivel, or otherwise deserve it). Really – If you see kids, give them nice toys, candy, or something pleasant. Tourists fall somewhere in between the two — adjust depending on their attitude.
