Longfellow Books Celebrates 10 Year Anniversary – December 3rd, 2010

Longfellow Books To Celebrate 10 Year Anniversary

PORTLAND, MAINE November 20, 2010 – Nestled in the heart of Monument Square for ten years, Longfellow Books stands as a fiercely independent competitor in the community bookstore industry.

Longfellow Books opened in October of 2000, taking over the space from its bankrupt predecessor Bookland.  Former Bookland employees fast-turned to entrepreneurs Stuart Gersen and Chris Bowe knew that the best way to escape the same fate would be to embrace and promote the local community feeling of Portland’s downtown.

Longfellow Books is known for providing intelligent and thoughtful recommendations, highly sought-after used books, dog biscuits and parking garage validation for their more than 10,000 regular customers.  The bookstore was one of the founding members of the Portland Buy Local organization and regularly promotes Maine writers and authors by hosting free book signings after hours in their main store space.

In addition, Longfellow Books has been dedicated to supporting their neighbors and friends in and around Monument Square.  Whether it is the over $35,000 they have donated to Portland Public Library or the 18,000 cups of Arabica coffee their employees have consumed, Stuart and Chris believe that the best way to say thank you for their success is to give back to the community.

They will be celebrating their 10th Anniversary on Friday, December 3rd from 5-11 PM.  Early evening festivities are set to include a graphic print display of the past 10 years “By The Numbers” produced by Forge Brands for the First Friday Art Walk.  Starting at approximately 8 PM the store will also host musical acts Zach Jones and Honey Clouds. A portion of the proceeds from sales that evening will benefit The Telling Room, a local non-profit organization that works with youth to encourage writing and literature for future generations.  All events during the evening will be free.
