Bob Marley hits the stage for shot at Guinness World Record to support Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital

Comedian Bob Marley hit the stage at Portland’s Comedy Connection on Custom House Wharf  at 7am Wednesday morning in his pursuit to break the Guinness Book of World Records feat for the longest stand up comedy performance by an individual. The previous record of 38 hours 6 minutes was set by an Australian in 2009.

Marley will shoot for 40 hours which would mean he will have to continue his comedy routine through 11pm on Thursday, September 23. Of course Guinness officials take the records very seriously and have judges on site to monitor the performance, as well as videotape (likely for later review and official sign off should the record be eclipsed). You guessed it, there are a number of rules that must be met throughout the routine, which include;

- Bob Marley will earn a 5 minute bathroom break for every hour he performs which will accrue during the show (let’s hope he can hold it in).

- Marley can repeat jokes once he is 4 hours into the show. Though we understand Marley has over 20 hours of material alone from his CD and tapes over the years, along with material not yet delivered. Marley even commented on Frank FM radio today that “if his mother were in the audience he could go on forever”.

- The audience must contain at least 10 members at all times who are awake for the routine.

- A time keeper along with two witnesses not associated with the comedian must be present at all times.

Tickets to the show are being sold in one hour increments for $10 (per hour) and $5 for students, with the ability for the audience to stay for as many hours as tone would like. Any audience members going to make the entire 40 hours?

What’s great…all proceeds from the event benefit The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. Way to go Bob! Good luck!

Ice Clearing Vehicle Falls through Deering Oaks pond

You don’t always need Portland comedians Bob Marley or George Hamm to provide comic relief. Earlier in the week, residents got quite a laugh at the expense of Portland Public Services, who unfortunately had a vehicle fall through the ice at Deering Oaks pond while clearing snow from the skating area.

A Portland Press Herald article provides further details and to make you feel a little better, lets us know that there have been at least three other occasions of a city snow clearing vehicle crashing through the ice. Hilarious!
