Adam Richman, a food fanatic with a serious appetite, travels around the country taking on the most legendary food challenges.  Adam has held every job in the food business and is now on a journey to explore the best eats our country has to offer.  Whether it’s a fourteen pound mountain pie, or an eight-patty burger, Adam is ready for the challenge.

Adam’s tasty tour takes him to Maine this week to the land of lighthouses and lobsters.  At his first stop, Adam visits the Lobster Shack Restaurant.  Home to the world’s best lobster, the Lobster Shack sells over 150 fresh lobsters a day.  On a New England style bun, topped with mayonnaise and a pickle, do you think Adam got the true lobster-eating experience in Maine?

Next, Adam goes to the Nosh Kitchen Bar to try the Apocalypse Now Burger.  Here, Adam is welcomed by “bacon dusted” fries before learning how this legendary burger is constructed.  Each of the four patties that make up this burger consist of beef brisket, beef shortrib, pork belly, and bacon ends.  Atop each patty is cheese and foie gras–this burger is literally bursting with flavor!

Finally Adam spends time at a restaurant that is described as a ”hodgepodge of food collected from around the nation”.  At Tradewinds Cafe, the Manimal Challenge is the “Maine” event!  Weighing in at over 5 pounds, this challenge consists of eight hamburger patties, two coleslaw topped hot dogs, a side of fries, a soda, and milkshake– but this isn’t just any milkshake as it’s made with an entire plate of coffee cake and is the thickest milkshake in Maine!  With only 20 minutes to finish this array of food, will Adam unleash the beast and take home a “Manimal” t-shirt?

The game will also feature a halftime performance by the Lady Red Claws dance team. According to Jon Jennings, Maine Red Claws President and General Manager, the basketball team plans to make fundraising events for schools an annual tradition.

The race has become very popular with an estimated 1,500 participants likely to toe the starting line, drawing from the sponsorship by New England Runner magazine and their feature of the race in the New England Pub Series. One reason, everyone participating in the race is welcomed to a post-race party sponsored by Shipyard Brewing Company providing complimentary beverages, Whole Foods Market providing healthy treats, and Portland Pie Company delivering the free pizza. Who wouldn’t want to grab a slice of pizza, a beer, and listen to some music after a 10k race?

The 10k race begins at 9 am on Fore Street near the beginning of the Eastern Promenade Trail and finishes at the East End Beach after a nice trip around Back Cove. The post-race party will be held at The Portland Company from 9:30am-11:30 am. There’s your motivation right there….finish earlier and have more pizza and beer! Wait there’s more…Awards and raffle prizes will be announced at 10:30am.

Representatives from the Bruce Roberts Toy Fund will be on hand accepting donations for their great charity. The Bruce Roberts Toy Fund has been providing holidays gifts to children in need in Cumberland, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc and York Counties since 1949. The Maine Red Claws are proud supporters of the Bruce Roberts Toy Fund, and everyone making a donation will be eligible to enter to win Red Claws memorabilia.

Ram Island Lighthouse Community attempting to employ internet crowd sourcing of funds to win US Coast Guard auction of historic Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse. Goal to provide a people’s option versus a private ownership lockout. With a winning bid the social community will propose and vote to make decisions on how to best manage the lighthouse under required National Historic Registry Guidelines. Also plan to “sensorize” the lighthouse for live internet feeds – web cams, weather, ocean currents, and more — for 24/7 virtual visitation.

Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse 1 mile offshore of Portland, Maine

“We Can Keep The Beacon Burning” is the chant of the Ram Island Lighthouse Community which just launched a social networking project to preserve Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse. They’re aiming to be the highest bidder to acquire the lighthouse one mile offshore from Portland, Maine, as a “people’s option.” With a precious handful of days to final bid on September 2, 2010, the Ram Island Lighthouse Community’s goal is to rapidly assemble a worldwide community of individuals finding charm in the ownership of a lighthouse, but never able to afford it as individuals. “Every kid and most adults would love to own a lighthouse,” says the Community Executive Director, Robert Muller. “Lighthouses have such a stoic, strong and gorgeous allure – a romantic icon standing in some of the most beautiful settings in nature.”

By creating a community of owners contributing $49 each for a ‘Keeper of the Lighthouse Membership Deed,’ the organization hopes to win the bid. Mr. Muller described the socially networked community as “a compelling people’s option to other potential purchasers from CT, NY and who knows where with different intentions to keep it in totally private hands. By joining our community with membership deed purchases, collectively the public will determine if our cooperative people’s model is a winner and gets the bid.”

This for-profit preservation model offers a unique twist where the members collectively assist in making the decisions through a voting process of how best to operate the lighthouse for the future. Muller continued, “We hope to crowd source ideas, especially how we want to sensorize the lighthouse with web, audio, weather, and other high tech equipment so people can actually experience the light through the internet.”

Mr. Muller has set up a corporate escrow account with Bath Savings Institute but needs to find a qualified agent for it. If the bid is not won, escrow funds are either refunded or members vote to donate the funds to non-profits. The website is http://www.ramislandlighthouse.com to learn more.

The lighthouse, operating since 1905, has been put up for auction bid by the United States Coast Guard. It has major historical and navigation importance to the maritime community. Still a valued aid to navigation, the Coast Guard will continue to serve its navigational operation while the winning bidder will maintain the property under National Historic Registry Guidelines.

Additionally, the Sidewalk Arts Festival is a professionally judged show with four cash prizes awarded. Each participant in the arts festival may submit one piece of their work for consideration by the judges.

The Goo Goo Dolls hit the State Theatre in Portland, Maine, Tuesday, October 26, for a 7:30pm show, only one day before Guster packs the State. What a great two days for music and the newly re-opened venue.

All tickets will be General Admission for the all ages show with doors opening at 6:30pm (can you already see the long line down Congress and High Street? I remember the “Guster on Ice” show in the winter years ago that did not stop concert goers one bit…and help boost the revenue of Starbucks for a couple of nights)

Goo Goo Doll tickets go onsale, Friday, August 27 at 10am. Tickets will be available online at www.statetheatreportland.com, or you can charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or purchase in person at the Cumberland County Civic Center box office with no service fees.

Tickets will distributed on a first come first served and will be available for each 15-minute period between 9am and 3pm, with twelve individuals permitted in the tower at one time. A ticket earns you entry into the Portland Headlight tower for only the 15-minute time period printed on the ticket. Children under 10 are prohibited from the tower.

Sebago Classic Car Night brings you one last Summer Monday night, as area car enthusiasts flock to the Sebago Brewing Company Gorham location at 29 Elm Street each Monday night during the summer.

Classic cars and custom motorcycles will be on display Monday, August 30, from 4-8. The evening features a 50/50 raffle, prizes, $5 lobster rolls, and an outdoor beer garden. The weekly event benefits a local food pantry. Enjoy!
