Liven Up Your Weekend With These Great Portland Events

Need something to do to liven up your weekend? Check out some of these events being held in the great city of Portland, Maine!

Saturday: 3rd Annual Maine Indoor Rowing Championship -

10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at CrossFit Casco Bay, 1000 Congress Street in Portland

Athletes can register online, with a $30 entry fee. Spectators may enjoy for free. This fierce competition is a collaboration between CrossFit Casco Bay and the Portland Community Rowing Association.

Saturday: Portland Pirates vs. Binghamton Senators -

7 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland

Watch the Pirates seek revenge on the Binghamton Senators in a thrilling hockey game! Tickets are between $12-18, call (207) 828-4665 for more information.

Sunday: Watch the South Portland High School production of the classic “Fiddler on the Roof”. Tickets may be purchased online – $15 general admission, $10 for students and seniors.

Wipeout Wednesdays: Free Ski and Snowboarding Tips at Payson Park in Portland, Maine

Red Sox Manager to Attend Benefit Dinner in South Portland

Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine will be attending the Hot Stove Dinner and Silent Auction with the Portland Sea Dogs this year, an event that benefits the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.

Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Seattle Mariners pitcher (and native Mainer) Charlie Furbush will also be attending the dinner, which takes place on Friday January 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sable Oaks Marriot in South Portland.

If you’d like the opportunity to help the cause and attend the event, tickets are $50 and are limited to 300. You can purchase the tickets in person at the Hadlock Field Ticket Office, by phone at 207-879-9500, or online at seadogs.com.

Portland Pirates Hockey Returns to Portland Saturday, October 15

Portland Pirates Hockey is back in Portland with the teams home opener this Saturday, October 15 at 7pm at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The Pirates, now the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes are hungry for a successful season under the new partnership with a goal to bring a Calder Cup Championship back to Portland.

Mayoral Mixer Fundraiser at Bayside Bowl – Wedesday, September 7

Visit with 12 of the 15 candidates for Mayor of Portland at Bayside Bowl, 58 Alder Street, Portland, on Wednesday evening, September 7, 2011, from 5pm to 7pm, as they compete in the first Mayoral Mixer Bowling Tournament. Candidates will be on hand to connect with the community while competing against each others bowling teams. The event will support the Preble Street Resource Center as Bayside Bowl will donate 5 percent of the food and dining sales to the cause and encourage supporters of the candidates to do so as well.

How does your favorite candidate look in their bowling shoes? How well do they bowl? How will they address your concerns and issues involving your city?

Portland Pirates 65 Roses 5k Run/Walk to benefit Cystic Fibrosis

The Portland Pirates hockey organization will partner with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to run/walk for a cure with the 2nd Annual 65 Roses 5K Race event on Sunday, September 25, 2011, in Portland’s East End. The event will begin on Cutter Street (off the Eastern Promenade towards to East End Beach and boat launch) with registration at 7am for both the 5k event and a kids run. The Kids Run will start at 8:15am with the 5k beginning at 9am.

The first 200 participants to register will receive a free technical running shirt. You can register online at www.active.com. Registration is $20 online and $25 on race day with 100% of all proceeds benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Last year, during the inaugural event the group raised over $14,000. Your Portland Sea Dogs will Go Green for their 7pm game Friday, August 12, 2011, against the Erie SeaWolves with a couple of promotional opportunities for fans in addition to the regular national pastime excitement, the AA affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, offers day in and day out.

Tim Thomas Hockey Camp 2011 – Falmouth & Yarmouth Maine, August 1-5

Stanley Cup Champion and Boston Bruins Goaltender Tim Thomas returns to Maine August 1-5, 2011, for another great youth hockey camp for those aspiring to be the next great hockey player. According the TimThomasHockey.com, the camp will once again be split amongst the Falmouth Ice Arena for forwards and defensemen, and at North Yarmouth Academy’s Travis Roy Arena for goaltenders, running Monday through Friday.

The camp is sure to sell out as usual, and likely even quicker given the continued and most recent success of what many currently consider the greatest professional goaltender in the world.

Portland’s 5th Annual Bark in the Park with Planet Dog, Portland Sea Dogs, and Portland Police Dept

Thursday, July 28, the folks from Planet Dog and the Portland Police Department with host the 5TH ANNUAL BARK IN THE PARK at Hadlock Field, as the Portland Sea Dogs (our very own Boston Red Sox AA affiliate) take on the Altoona Curve (the Pittsburgh Pirates AA affiliate).

The event allows pet owners to bring their dogs to the ballpark in a special section reserved for them and their pet. Dogs and their families are invited to enjoy an evening of baseball while raising funds to support the Canine Unit of the Portland Police Department.

Bark in the Park ticket holders sit in the 3rd base bleacher section with all access to the “birthday section” behind the bleachers. There will be dogs up for adoption, a grassy relief area, wading pool, canine watering station, dog treats and games for pups and their families. Dog valets will also be on hand to care for pets so people can visit the concessions.

Beginning at 6:15pm there will be a pre-game parade for pups and people led by Slugger, the Seadog’s mascot, and the Portland Police K-9 Units around Hadlock Field, prior to the start of the game at 7pm.

Tickets are are $7.00 for people and $7.00 for dogs (children under 2 free). They can be purchased at the Planet Dog Company Store at 211 Marginal Way, Portland (207-346-8606) or by calling Planet Dog at 800-381-1516. Every ticket holder with a tail gets a free Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Baseball chew toy and admission to the pre-game on field parade with Slugger. All dogs must have a ticket and dog tickets are limited and MUST be purchased in advance.
