Portland – #2 Best City to Meet Eligible Women

Portland, Maine has been named the #2 city in the United States for eligible women, with Washington D.C. coming in first, according to Men’s Health. But let’s face it – we have the whoopie pies, so we win every contest automatically.

According to Men’s Health, determining the most eligible ladies came from the ratio of single women to single men, the percentage of college-educated women, the percentage of gainfully employed single women (all from the Census), and the number who work out (Experian Simmons).

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Portland

Courtesy of Dough McIntire, special guest contributor:
Who doesn’t want to party with the Irish? Oh, need proof? Well, how packed do you see the Old Port get on Virgin of Guadalupe Day? Grandparents Day? Snooze. Yeah, but Saint Patrick’s Day is a whole other ball of cabbage my friends.

This year will start out as they all do; with a parade. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Who goes to parades anymore?” Again, Saint Patrick’s Day! Where else are you encouraged to completely lose your mind at a parade? And yes, it’s happening on the big day itself. That’s right, Saturday March 17th at 10:30 a.m., the biggest and best St. Paddy’s Parade to ever hit Maine will march down Commercial Street between the Fish Pier and the State Pier.

There will be not one, but two pipe bands because hey, what’s an Irish holiday without inviting the Scots? The Girl Scouts will be coming out 100 strong to celebrate their 100th anniversary. The Stillson School of Irish Dance will be with us. Can you say Riverdance, people? The Portland Hurling Club and the youth Maine Gaelic Sports Alliance will be there supporting Irish sports in Maine. Police, Fire, the Emerald Society, Ancient Order of Hibernians and your hosts, The Irish American Club of Maine who will be carrying the flags of all Ireland in an incredible display.

Join the Irish American Club of Maine in the Old Port for this, the peak of our year, Saint Patrick’s Day. If you happen to run into one of us, raise your Guinness and give a hearty “Slainte!”

In addition, The Irish American Club of Maine is pleased to announce that reservations are now being accepted for our annual St. Patrick’s Dinner and Show. The dinner is scheduled to take place on March 10; 5:00 Happy Hour at the cash bar with dinner served at 6 p.m.

Such a spectacle may make you hungry, or perhaps thirsty. Feel free to finish the parade with a meal and a pint or two in one of the many Irish establishments in the Old Port; many of which open their doors for breakfast as early as 6:30. Throughout the day, there will be authentic Irish music, dancing, and pipe bands.

The cost for the entire evening is $18/adult and $10/child and will include appetizers, our fabulous traditional corned beef dinner, the Highland String Trio and the Stillson School of Irish Dance for your entertainment pleasure.

Reservations are easy. Simply email club2@irishofmaine.org and use DINNER in the subject line. Checks can be mailed to The Irish American Club of Maine PO Box 1683 Portland, ME 04104. Once payment is received, you will be sent a confirmation. Call Kathy Reilly at 712-5191 for any questions.

An evening of fine Irish food and entertainment for only $18!
