Man vs. Food features Portland, Maine tomorrow at 9pm

(Courtesy of Elyse Heslin, on behalf of The Travel Channel)

About the Show
Adam Richman, a food fanatic with a serious appetite, travels around the country taking on the most legendary food challenges.  Adam has held every job in the food business and is now on a journey to explore the best eats our country has to offer.  Whether it’s a fourteen pound mountain pie, or an eight-patty burger, Adam is ready for the challenge.

Portland Episode – Wednesday September 8th at 9:00 E/P
Adam’s tasty tour takes him to Maine this week to the land of lighthouses and lobsters.  At his first stop, Adam visits the Lobster Shack Restaurant.  Home to the world’s best lobster, the Lobster Shack sells over 150 fresh lobsters a day.  On a New England style bun, topped with mayonnaise and a pickle, do you think Adam got the true lobster-eating experience in Maine?

Next, Adam goes to the Nosh Kitchen Bar to try the Apocalypse Now Burger.  Here, Adam is welcomed by “bacon dusted” fries before learning how this legendary burger is constructed.  Each of the four patties that make up this burger consist of beef brisket, beef shortrib, pork belly, and bacon ends.  Atop each patty is cheese and foie gras–this burger is literally bursting with flavor!

Finally Adam spends time at a restaurant that is described as a ”hodgepodge of food collected from around the nation”.  At Tradewinds Cafe, the Manimal Challenge is the “Maine” event!  Weighing in at over 5 pounds, this challenge consists of eight hamburger patties, two coleslaw topped hot dogs, a side of fries, a soda, and milkshake– but this isn’t just any milkshake as it’s made with an entire plate of coffee cake and is the thickest milkshake in Maine!  With only 20 minutes to finish this array of food, will Adam unleash the beast and take home a “Manimal” t-shirt?

Stay tuned…we’ll bring you a sneak peek of Nosh Kitchen Bar and our interview today with owner Matt Moran in a post later today. We can’t wait, the interview went amazing!

In the meantime, check out this sneak peek Man vs. Food video of Adam learning the proper way to eat a lobster in Maine!

Grant Street Orchestra brings that Parkside vibe to SPACE

Seven piece Funk/Hip-Hop group Grant Street Orchestra is having a party in the hub of Portland’s art and music scene, playing their first 18+ show ever. At 9 p.m. Friday Aug. 27, SPACE Gallery on Congress Street in Portland is going to get a taste of Parkside as the stage will be dressed up as a front stoop from the funky side of town. Grant Street is celebrating the end of an amazing summer with friends, dancing, and playing music one last time before the fall air sneaks through the city.

Headliners Grant Street Orchestra will close out the night in a cavalcade of funk, with help from a handful of special guests. A few new songs will debut, along with an expansion of their already impressive horn section, and DJ Noel Brennan working the turntables!

GSO has invited some friends from the neighborhood to join them in the festivities; The four piece hip-hop powerhouse Sandbag will be taking the stage for some mic control of the utmost distinction. With strong musical and lyrical talents from each member, their sound is the hip-hop voice of Portland.

Jessie Pilgrim and The Bonfire bring a change of flavor to the line-up. Pilgrim is the notorious bad-boy of folk in the Portland music scene with influences ranging from Johnny Cash to NOFX.

The sound-scape duo Powerlines will open the night, handmade instruments and electronics in-tow. Their trip-hop based sounds will set the mood for what is sure to be a long night of live music and dancing.

“This is our last set of the summer and we want to go as big possible with this show – we’re holding nothin’ back,” said Andy Barbo, the lead guitar player for GSO. “The band is really looking forward to this performance in particular because this is going to be our first 18+ show. We’re excited to put on a show for those who can’t get in to our regular performances in town. SPACE Gallery is the perfect place for this crowd and this show.”

Created in the summer of 2008, GSO started as a two-man group consisting of lead MC MINT, and guitarist Andy Barbo, playing songs at open mic nights in Portland using only one microphone, one guitar, and a loop station. Throughout the course of the year they gained popularity and band members. Starting with a the horn section of Geoff Zimmerman and Henry Redman, the group then acquired others to provide a stronger hip-hop feel, adding Peter Eberhardt and Charlie Sichterman for bass and drums, soon after. GSO then took up I-KUE, a second MC, and came out with their very first album, The Parkside EP, in the summer of 2009. GSO continued to play shows all over the Greater Portland area. They will soon be taking a hiatus for the fall to record their first full length album.

For more information or to schedule an interview with Grant Street Orchestra, please contact Andy Barbo at GrantStreetOrchestra@gmail.com or 774-212-1277.

Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food films in Portland, airing in September

In early July, Adam Richman, host of the Travel Channel’s “Man vs. Food” visited a few area restaurants where they filmed segments for a show believed to air in early/mid-September. While in Portland, the show visited Nosh Kitchen Bar at 551 Congress Street to see how Richman could handle the “Apocalypse Now”, noted on the Nosh Kitchen Bar Menu, as a burger containing seared pork belly, american cheese, cured bacon, foie gras, house mayo, and macerated orange and cherries for $20. Another visit was paid to the Tradewinds Cafe off Route 1 in Arundel (1697 Portland Road).

At Tradewinds Cafe, Richman took the famous Manimal Challengeconsume two loaded kraut or slaw dogs, an eight patty cheeseburger, a small order of fries, a can Moxie, and a one pound milkshake in less than 20 minutes.

According to EatsFeats.com, Matt Stonie owns the record of the Manimal Challenge having completed the feat in 5 minutes, while only 3 others have accomplished the feat. We’re not sure whether Adam Richman was one of the other 3 and no one is talking, so I guess we’ll have to wait until the show airs to see. More details on the airing of the show to follow as soon as we hear.

While in town, Richman gave a shout out to the Portland Harbor Hotel via his Twitter account.

For more information on the restaurants, visit them on the web at Tradewinds Cafe Facebook and Nosh Kitchen Bar.com

Shanghai Stories – A Multimedia Performance Inspired by Life in Shanghai with Ryan Baird

Shanghai Stories – A Multimedia Performance Inspired by Life in Shanghai

Maine guitarist and composer Ryan Baird returns to Portland to share his experiences living and studying in Shanghai, China, for the past two years through a unique multimedia performance called Shanghai Stories at One Longfellow Square on Tuesday, August 24, at 8:00 p.m. Having earned his way on stage with world-class musicians in the Shanghai music scene while rapidly learning to speak and write Chinese, Baird returns to Portland transformed.

“Shanghai Stories is my attempt to bring a piece of my life abroad back for those in Portland to experience in a dynamic way,” says Baird.

Combining live performances of his original compositions with video, photography, and storytelling, Shanghai Stories is a delightful mosaic of experiences, observations, and lessons—all told from the perspective of a foreigner immersed in the juxtaposition of a modern city in one of the world’s most ancient cultures.

“When I starting planning my trip home, I knew I wanted to share my music, but I also wanted to find ways of enhancing the performance so that the audience could really see, hear, and feel how different life is in Shanghai.” So Baird teamed up with Portland-based design company Apogee Creative Studios (www.apogeecs.com) to create this unique event. The audience can expect to see scenes of daily life in Shanghai, hear the views of locals, and even learn how to speak a few phrases of Chinese. Baird will discuss cultural differences between East and West, the intricacies of the Chinese language, and his experience as a foreigner. At the same time, the audience will hear Baird’s process of translating his experiences into music. One piece, “Gu Zheng Song” is inspired by an old traditional Chinese stringed instrument. The melody of another piece takes its shape from the four tones of Mandarin Chinese.

Baird grew up in Maine and has been creating music since age 10. He began studying jazz theory and composition at the University of Maine in Augusta while only a junior in high school. Already performing professionally by age 18, Baird continued his studies at the University Southern Maine and the City College of New York. Baird has shared the stage with many talented musicians such as Adam Chilenski, Sam Caldwell, RJ Miller, James Tweedie, Devin Gray, and Adam Frederick at such events as the Maine Jazz Festival, the Deer Isle Jazz Festival, and Portland Maine’s “Dimensions in Jazz” series. In 2008, Baird’s interest in Chinese culture brought him to Shanghai, China, where he currently resides. Baird performs regularly with multiple groups in Shanghai, and is a teacher at the well-known JZ School.

Shanghai Stories will be performed at One Longfellow Square on August 24 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 and will be available at One Longfellow Square ticket office. You can also hear Baird performing with his jazz trio (featuring Chris Sprague and Noel Brennan) at the Dogfish Bar & Grille on August 19 and the North Star Music Café on August 27.
