Women of Greater Portland, ages 13 and older, will be offered the opportunity by the Portland Police Department to participate in a Rape Aggression Defense training course this February. The classes will teach women basic self defense skills to help them protect themselves from dangerous situations. The five part class is scheduled for February 2, 4, 9, and 11 from 6 to 9pm, and for February 13 from 8am-12pm, at the Portland Police Department at 109 Middle Street.
A suggested donation of $25 will support the Amy St. Laurent Fund, which sponsors R.A.D. trainings throughout the area. For more information, please call 874-8643, or email ppdrad@portlandmaine.gov.

Two years ago my wife took this class and really liked the experience. She shared a lot of the information she gleaned from the class and there were quite a few things I was surprised to learn. After thinking about them it seemed like “well, sure yeah that would make sense to do in that situation, but I may have never thought of it.” It’s not just about physical techniques, the add in ways of thinking, how to be mindful of what you are doing and signals you may be sending to would be attackers. My wife was skeptical but ended up giving it rave reviews.
