On November 3, 2009, and perhaps earlier through absentee voting (early October), Maine voters will have an opportunity to accept or reject a law passed by the Maine legislature and signed into law in May 2009 by Governor John Baldacci that legalized same-sex marriage in Maine. The law was to take effect on September 12, 2009, however, the collection of enough signatures (more than the necessary 55,087 needed) has enabled the suspension of the enactment of the law until the decision is made via the November 3 vote.
The question on the ballot will appear as follows;
“Do you want to reject the new law that lets same-sex couples marry and allows individuals and religious groups to refuse to perform these marriages?”
A vote of “No”, thus would support marriage equality, same-sex marriage, which is the view of the group, Vote No on 1 – Protect Maine Equality. You can find additional information about their efforts and views here – No on 1 – Protect Maine Equality site
A vote of “Yes”, would be in opposition of same-sex marriage and thus a repeal of the law. Stand for Marriage Maine represents supporters in opposition of same-sex marriage. You can find additional information about their efforts and views here – Yes on 1 – Stand For Marriage Maine
If you have watched television, listened to the radio, read the newspaper, or perused Facebook, you have most likely seen advertisements from both sides. Just prior to Labor Day Weekend, the opponents of the law had collected enough signatures, certified by the Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, to place the referendum on the November ballot to let Maine voters decide whether or not to repeal marriage equality.
According to a couple of polls I have seen, the decision is pretty well split at the moment and will most likely come down to the wire. Whatever your view on the issue, please do get out and vote! What will be the outcome of the November 3rd vote?…..stay tuned!
